The Urban Indian Center of Salt Lake (UICSL) is commemorating our 50th anniversary by recognizing five outstanding American Indian/Alaskan Native community members who have made exceptional contributions in the fields of Art, Community Service, Culture, Dance and Sports.
The Woven Wisdom Award
Five winners will receive $5,000.
Five runners-up will receive $500.
- The UICSL Review Committee will select one winner and one runner-up in each category.
- Five Categories: Art, Community Service, Culture, Dance and Sports
- Both the winners and runners-up will be announced during Gala event in Early Fall (exact date to be determined) and will be highlighted through UICSL social media channels including UICSL website and will include their pictures and biographies.

- UICSL recognizes excellence in professional or amateur, that work in any medium but not limited to:
- Painters, photographers, filmmakers, sculptors, and digital artists.
- Please send photos of the work, should the committee need to see the piece in person we will reach out to you individually.
- We don’t want to be responsible for art/damage
Community Service
- UICSL celebrates those who contribute their time and efforts to the community.
Culture
- For individuals who demonstrate commitment to support, honor tradition, values, beliefs, in the American Indian/Alaska Native community.
Dance
- UICSL celebrates beauty in dance.
- We believe that dance is a form of expression and a language.
Sports
- UICSL recognizes fortitude and resiliency through sports and the competition that it brings.
- We believe in celebrating our notable (and local) athletes in any field of sport.
- Applicants may by athletes, coaches, or anyone involved within the sports community.
For Your Knowledge:
- NO Preference will be given for either a written or a digital submission.
- Candidates may apply for two separate award categories but can only be awarded in one category.

Eligibility
Nominees must meet two (2) eligibility criteria:
- Nominees must be either:
- American Indian / Alaskan Native
- First Nations
- Nominees must reside in the state of Utah.
Review Process/Selection Criteria
The Urban Indian Center of Salt Lake Review Committee will convene starting June 2024.
In deciding winners for each Award category, the Committee will consider, among other criteria, the following:
- Past and current achievements.
- Demonstrated excellence in the nominated category.
- The nominee’s status as an inspirational role model for the American Indian/Alaska Native community in and around Salt Lake City, Utah.
- The nominee’s future goals and impact.
Additional Criteria to be considered:
- Leadership: An individual who makes significant contributions to building a sense of unity and purpose in his or her community.
- Social Responsibility: An individual who assists others in improving their communities through volunteer programs, social groups, outreach centers, sports programs, or after-school groups.
- Mentorship: An individual who demonstrates positive values and behaviors that influence others to emulate or aspire to emulate.
- Change Agent: An individual who influences or stimulates others to effect positive changes through personal development or self-improvement.
