Two Spirit Pow Wow: Spoken-word Writing Workshop: 2-part workshop

Wednesdays: June 8th & 15th from 7:00 – 8:00 pm

In honor and celebration of the Two Spirit Powwow and Pride Month, SLCC’s Community Writing Center (CWC) and Student Writing & Reading Center (SWRC) are hosting a spoken-word writing workshop series. For Part 1 on June 8th, we will explore narrative poetry and flash memoir writing centered on LGBTQIA2S+ experiences intended to be performed in front of an audience. The workshop will focus on using narrative elements such as characterization, setting, point-of-view, imagery, rhyme, and rhythm to tell stories about history, identity, culture, and community.

Part 2 on June 15th will take the form of a “Two Spirit Open Mic Night.” Participants from Part 1 of the workshop series and other members of the community are invited to share their spoken-word poetry, songs, and/or memoirs live at the CWC. Light refreshments will be provided.

NOTE: This workshop series was created in collaboration with the Urban Indian Center of Salt Lake, Salt Lake Community College, and the SLCC Gender and Sexuality Student Resource Center. The Two Spirit Pow Wow will be held on Saturday, June 18th from 12-6 p.m. at the SLCC Taylorsville-Redwood Campus.

Cost: Free.
