Urban Indian Center of Salt Lake

Culture is Our Greatest Medicine

Our center aims to bridge the gap between the concrete of the city and the spirit of the land. The goal is to show that culture isn’t a museum exhibit—it’s the “medicine” that powers our health, youth, and social services.

Food Sovereignty & Medicine

Healing the body with ancestral knowledge.

Seasonal classes on the “Three Sisters” (Corn, Beans, Squash) and identifying local Salt Lake Valley indigenous plants like Sego Lily or Chokecherry. Allowing us to reconnect with the land, even within city limits, to combat diabetes and promote nutritional sovereignty.

Workshops on the sacred uses of Sage, Cedar, Sweetgrass, and Tobacco are guided by tribal members with cultural knowledge. Teaching participants the “How and Why” of clearing space and mind, providing a mental health sanctuary for those navigating urban stressors.

Language

& Oral Traditions

The vibration of the land.

Introductory sessions currently for Diné (Navajo) language. Utilizing modern applications combined with tribal member-led pronunciation circles.

Language is the vessel of culture. By speaking the words of the land we stand on, we honor our ancestors and our future. The center holds evening storytelling gatherings where tribal members share the origin stories of the Salt Lake Valley, tribal traditions, and the surrounding peaks.
